“LET THE BIBLE SPEAK”

“LET THE BIBLE SPEAK” The Bible gives a warning concerning false prophets. Even during the times of prophetic revelation God gave the following test for the professed prophet: “…when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him,” Deut. 18:22. While this warning was given to Old Testament Israel, it remains a good test to this day. Some have predicted a set time for the Lord’s return on more than one occasion. The selected time has come and gone and they have taken their seats among the false prophets. In the New Testament we are warned about those who are false prophets. Jesus said, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves…” Matt 7:15. The Apostle John wrote the following in his Epistle, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world,” 1 John 4:1. The Apostle Peter warned, “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction,” 2 Pet 2:1. Those today who profess to have the gift of prophecy align themselves against the plain teachings of the scriptures. The spiritual gifts that were present in the first century church were temporary. The Apostle Paul said that these spiritual gifts, including the gift of prophecy, would cease. He wrote to the Corinthians: “Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away,” 1 Cor.13:8-10. The “perfect” has come with the completed revelation written in the Bible. Divine revelation ceased when the last book of the Bible was written. Melvin Blalock, Evangelist South Walnut Church of Christ 306 South Walnut St. • Cleburne, TX 76033 Sun. 10:30 A.M. & 2:00 P.M.
